Opening Day Pizza
America's national pastime meets America's favorite food in Baltimore. Plus a look back at 1964 Opening Day - 60 years since pizza arrived at Yankee Stadium!
This past week ushered in Major League Baseballās Opening Day with matchups starting across the country for the 2024 season. Our very own Bob had the opportunity to attend the Baltimore Oriolesā first game, and after a moment of silence for the tragic bridge collapse, the Oās leapt into action scoring a victory against the Angels.
The less reported story line of the game, though, is that Squireās Cafe was able to dish out some of their signature personal pies.
Squireās is a Baltimore institution that opened in 1920 and was bought by the current owners (the Romiti family) in 1952. Their pies are perfect for one or two people and go down easy (especially when washed down with that other Baltimore institution Natty Boh!)
I think the sport most closely associated with pizza is football, but baseball is not far behind. And of the famous baseball teams, there are few as famous as the Bronx Bombers. But whatās this New York teamās relationship with New Yorkās most popular food?
1964 marked the year when Harry M. Stevensāthe father of American concessions and perhaps hot dog inventorā was dethroned from Yankee Stadiumās concession business.
This April 9 article marks the first mention of pizza being served at Yankee Stadium, among other ācute gimmicksā like coffee cups that donāt burn you!
I wish old William Wallace spent more time talking about the pizza here and its format, so if there are any readers out that want to hazard a guess about what it was like, please do so in the comments!
Hereās to another season of slices and home runs!
