L&B Spumoni Gardens is Opening in Dumbo! Allegedly.
The Brooklyn institution has set their sights on fall 2024 to open their second location... but we need to see it to believe it
L&B Spumoni Gardens is a must-visit pizza destination in Brooklyn. Not Williamsburg or Dumbo but deep in the boroughโs heart in Gravesend. This destination is not a typical stop on our pizza tours, but we have taken a handful of select groups there to devour their famous Sicilian slices and ices (spumoni in Italian).
Their storied history started in the 30s, when Ludovico Barbati started selling spumoni from his horse and wagon - note their logo - and has become a staple of the New York pizza scene.
Their storied past hit tragedy when owner Louis Barbati, descendant of the founder, was murdered in 2016 in a tragic robbery gone wrong. A few years after, the family decided to fit out a place closer to the city in Dumbo, just down the street from the Julianaโs and Grimaldiโs (a famous Brooklyn pizza feud for another time).
Despite announcing its opening in 2019, L&B has been beset by issues causing delays. This time it may be for real, but we need to see it to believe it. Read more in the Brooklyn Eagle.
Even if the famed location opens its second location and can serve as a more accessible Sicilian slice, true pilgrims need to visit the original location for the full experience.
