Bob's Pizza Round Up
News from the pizza world - farewell to a legend, Lucia's uptown expansion, and the last cry of the little wolf
We get questions constantly about what are the latest goings on in the pizza world. We’re here to guide people both on tours, and more broadly, through their lived pizza experience. For that reason, I’m pleased to present: mid-winter Bob’s Pizza Tour Round Up!
A few quick bulletins:
Let’s dive in:
RIP Patsy Grimaldi
Nephew of Patsy Lancieri, founder of the famed Harlem joint Patsy’s, Patsy Grimaldi was a staple of the New York pizza scene for decades. He founded of Grimaldi’s and then later Juliana’s (after a business partner bought him out - along with his name), Patsy loved the art of pizza so much so that he came out of retirement in 2013. He could still be seen at Juliana’s regularly up until the end.
Juliana’s will forever be a great spot to curl up with a pie inside - or enjoy on the bikes with a city view!
The Upper East Side ups its game
A new year brings a third outpost for the Sheepshead Bay team. This is a welcome addition to the uptown pizza scene, which has slowly been beefing up its defenses in its battle against the downtown (and vastly superior pizza scene).
Lucia joins Xeno’s, Patsy’s and Mimi’s uptown to make for a more compelling pizza landscape.
Lupetto closes a year after opening
The team behind La Pecora Bianca shuttered the doors at nearby Lupetto (or perhaps it should be called La Pecora Nera). The Italian steakhouse cum pizzeria didn’t make it unfortunately despite a quality, middle of the road Neapolitan style pie. Arrivederci!
That’s it for now, folks. Until next time!
